CONGRATULATIONS

Congratulations to Kristi Claar on being named the 2014 Cambria County Fire Queen. She was selected at the competition held Saturday June 28th in Cresson and will reign over the events during the convention in Cresson this week. Kristi is the daughter of Raymond and Dana Claar of Lilly. She represented the Lilly Fire Company in the event.

CARNIVAL WRAPUP
The Lilly Fire Company had a very successful firemen’s week with exceptionally large turnouts on Friday and Saturday evenings. The parade Friday was small but colorful with Imler Fire Company coming the farthest distance. Frank Klayko beat me out on hot sausage sandwiches getting one each night, I missed a night. Several out of state visitors I noticed included Bill Misiura from Florida, Bob McLucas from Florida, and Chick Battisti of Phoenix, Arizona. Ray Archihowsky was also present from Harrisburg. The Saturday night band “Pistol Pegs and the Beer Kegs” drew a large gathering for their music. The weather really co-operated making it fun to be outside late into the night.

Through the course of the week most of my grandchildren were in town to enjoy the rides games and food including Derick and Laura Reed, Desiree Bukwoski, Allison Barlick, Connor and Kaylee Mento, Cora and Nola Klein and Kiana and Kiera Nadolsky.

ADVANCE NOTICE
There will be the Town Wide Yard sale again this year on August 2. Nicole Boland will lead up the event for the Lilly Decorating committee. This year there will be a map available for visitors. To have your address listed on the map the fee will be $5. St. Lukes will have a bake sale and the fire company will have their refreshment stand open. Past years have always been busy.

MINERS MONUMENT
On Sunday, June 29 I stopped to talk to visitors at the miner memorial. Robert “Chick” Battisti was visiting from Phoenix Arizona along with his nephews and great nephews from Detroit, Michigan, Bill. Ed and William Russ. The Russ group had ridden motorcycles from Detroit. Chick was full of praise for the miner monument and the community. He was taking his group up to see the murals at the American Legion. Chick had graduated from the Lilly High School in 1950 and played the first baseball game at the War Memorial when it opened that year.

FOURTH OF JULY
On Thursday night there will be fireworks in Gallitzin at 10:00 PM. Then on both Friday and Saturday nights there will be firework displays in Cresson at 10:30 each night. Also on Saturday the Cambria County Firemen’s Convention Parade will be held in Cresson. Grandson Connor Mento and I will be on the judging stand as I will represent my home post, Sankertown VFW, on the platform.

If you are putting fireworks off in your yard be especially careful with the young children and your pets. Don’t injure either with careless actions.
