This Saturday, May 19, will be the annual Easter Egg hunt to be held at the firemen’s pavilion at 1:00 P.M. This event is hosted by the Lilly-Washington Public Library.



The Lilly United Methodist Churches sister church in Wilmore will have a Holy Thursday service tonight at 7:00 P.M. On Easter Sunday there will be a Sunrise service at the Lilly church at 6:30 A.M. There will not be a 10:30 service.

Our Lady of Mount Carmel National Catholic Church will hold a Holy Thursday Mass followed by a procession. There will be Veneration of the Cross Friday at 3:00 P: M. Saturday there will be a Vigil service at 3:00 P: M. Then at 4:00 P: M there will be a Resurrection Mass and Procession.  There will not be a Mass on Easter Sunday.

St. Luke’s Lutheran Church

On Maundy Thursday there will be Seder at the First Lutheran Church in Portage. Call the pastor if you will be attending at 886-2222. On Good Friday the Portage Ministerium will be holding a Cross Walk vigil starting at noon at the Sacred Heart Church, Then at 1:00 P.M. at the Bethany Church and then at Saint Josephs at 2:00 P.M. The event will end at the cross at Decort Funeral Home at 3:00 P.M.

 At 7:00 P.M. at St. Luke’s here in Lilly there will be a Good Friday Passion of the Cross Tenebrae service of shadows. On Holy Saturday there will be an Easter egg hunt at the First Lutheran Church in Portage from 2:30 until 4:00 P.M. There will be an Easter Vigil service with Holy Baptism at St. Luke’s at 8:00 P.M.

On Easter Sunday there is a service at 6:30 A.M. Men of the parish will prepare breakfast. Then at 9:00 A.M. there will be a service at the First Lutheran Church. There will not be an 11:00 A.M. service at St. Luke’s.


Our Lady of the Alleghenies

Holy Thursday there will be a Mass of the Lord’s Supper and Procession at 7:00 P.M. There will be visits to the Repository until 10:30 P.M. Good Friday there will be a 1:30 Liturgical Service of the Passion and Death of Our Lord and a Veneration of the Cross & Holy Communion Service. Holy Saturday there will be Blessing of the Pascal Food Baskets at the Church at 2:00 P.M. and an Easter Vigil Service and Resurrection Mass at 8:30 P.M. Easter Sunday there will be Mass at the Chapel at 8:00 A.M. and at the Church at 10:00 A.M.



Last week I mentioned the Traditional Anglers of Pennsylvania and their stocking of trout in the Borough and Township. They started with the Little Conemaugh on the 15th and will also do Bear Rock Run on the 29th, both streams will get stocked two times. This is great, especially for the children of the area. Help them with a donation to T.A.Ps 4 Sherry Lane, Portage PA 15946. Put a “Thanks for stocking Lilly streams” note with the donation



Sweep your sidewalks and driveways now before the street sweepers come through. Don’t place piles in the street as it’s hard for the sweeper to gather them, just scatter the cinders around. The town will look good if everyone pitches in. If you have an elderly or infirm neighbor or relative help them out.



The Francis L. McCool Lilly American Legion will be awarding three scholarships this year to students from Lilly Borough or Washington Township who are seniors at Penn Cambria or Bishop Carroll High School. There will be a $2500, $1500 and $1000 scholarship awarded on Memorial Day. The winners will be requested to read their entries at the War Memorial Service at 11:00 A.M. at the Lilly Field.

Entries are to write a 300 word or less essay on “The Significance of D-Day 70 years Later” It is to be returned to the Lilly American Legion on or before May 12, Students are to place their name, address and telephone number on the envelope but not on the essay pages.



Sympathy is extended to the family and friends of Mary Jo (Martynuska) Butch who recently passed away. Mary Jo was a daughter of the late Val and Phyllis (Albarano) Martynuska.



Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church will be hosting a Swiss steak dinner on Sunday, April 27, from 11:00 A.M. until 2:00 P.M. at the church. Adults are $9 and children $4.50. All take outs are $9. Call 884-0205.



Once again floral baskets can be ordered from the Lilly-Washington Historical Society for placement on graves in the Lilly cemeteries for Memorial Day. Baskets are $18 and can be ordered at Gall’s Insurance or by writing to the Historical Society at 417 Cleveland Street, Lilly Pa. 15938. Order forms are also in the recently mailed society newsletter.



My son-in-law Don and I were taking a ride on his new land rover. As we descended down a logging trail in the middle of nowhere I noticed something coming down the trail. I thought “Here comes Big Foot and I don’t have my camera.” As the apparition got closer we realized it was Bruce Hershel out for a leisurely Saturday afternoon walk.



Today, April 17th is my sister Eileen Sweenys birthday and also my granddaughter Allison Barlicks birthday. She is sweet sixteen. Annette Smychynsky, Agnes Leap and MaryAgnes Slebodnik will also be celebrating today. Then on the18th it is party time for Matt McCoy and Pricilla Przybys. On the 19th Jocelyn Myers, Leonard Olsick and Anna Wozniak celebrate as will Margaret Cochran, Anna Ferrence, Cynthia Funari, Sally Lassak and Thomas Muldoon Jr on the 20th. The 21st finds Justin Conley, Joseph Kodosky and Irene Krumenacker observing birthdays as will Dan George, Francis P. Claar, Donald Finnegan, Frances George, Dallas Hite, Judy McIntosh and Marisa Rabatin on the 22nd. Happy Birthday to All!



Judy and Ron Muldoon are observing their wedding anniversary today, June 17th. On the 20th Doug and Mary Lou Custer will observe their anniversary followed by Kathy and Ray Martynuska and Jim and Dawn Paul on the 22nd. Happy Anniversary to All!



Got a call from a lady who says she remembers before Pete Mattielo had a pool room on Cleveland Street the place had been a grocery store that “sold the best root beer barrel candy”
