Lilly Lines by Jack Barlick 886-4694

Despite chilly temperatures the Lilly area ghosts and goblins took to the streets for an afternoon of merry making on Sunday, October 25. Fortunately I had grand children at my home to help dispense candy to the many groups of children who stopped by. I was told there was a colorful turnout for the parade.

My fun loving granddaughter Kiera Nadolsky held a 12th birthday party in my back yards with her school mates and cousins. The theme was a Spook party staying with the holiday weekend. The kids wrapped themselves as mummies and also bobbed for gummy worms in whipped cream. Aunt Cindy Rabish dug up the ideas to make it a fun day.

Mark your calendar for the Veterans Day Service to be held on November 11 sponsored by the Lilly American Legion Post 628 and the Lilly-Washington War Memorial Association at the War Memorial field. At least 23 names of veterans who have passed away since last Veterans Day will be read in a roll call at 11:00 AM.

Although unplanned, I wound up spending 14 continuous days in the hospital from October 6 until October 21. Thanks to those who called, visited or sent a card. Thanks also to daughter Cindy for again keeping the column going. This has been a lousy health year however I had a lot of very good staff at UPMC Altoona during my stay. The second long one this year.

I am told another recently completed restoration of a large stained glass window at St. Luke’s has been reinstalled. These pieces of art are masterpieces of 100 years ago. They are exceptionally beautiful after dark when the church lights are on.

Bishop Mark Bartchak will bless the recently installed statue honoring St. John Paul ll at the Manor in Cresson on Sunday November 1 following a 10:30 AM Mass in the chapel at John Paul Manor.

Don’t forget to vote on November 3rd.

You are an old timer if you bought gasoline at Carneys round garage on old 22 and 53 in Cresson. Remember the fruit stand across the street where Cresson Springs is now?

Sincere sympathy is extended to the Glenn family; Dawn, daughter of Francis and the late Mary ‘Hubba’ Glenn, passed away last week after a courageous battle. She leaves behind many who loved her.

A special happy birthday goes out to my little helper, who is very sweet and caring, my niece, Kiera Nadolsky. She turns 12 on October 24th. Kiera helps me each year with many things, but what I count on her the most for is when we have to bake all of her Pappy’s Nut and Poppy Seed Rolls for the holidays; it can be a daunting task (because her Pappy insists we make enough to feed an army) but with Kiera assisting (or me now assisting her) we can get them done (and taste test a few) in no time. Happy Birthday my little sweetheart!

Mr. & Mrs. Joe Gides celebrate their anniversary today. Larry & Linda Behe celebrate on the 25th. James and Tricia McMahon celebrate on the 27th and Ronald & Jeannie George on the 29th. Last but not least is John and Joyce Pyo celebrating on the 30th. Happy Anniversary!

You are an old timer if you remember trick or treating in town and receiving apples, pennies, and candy while wearing a black Lone Ranger mask.

We got a decent share of much needed rain lately. From Maryland to Georgia however it has been a rain disaster with up to 18 inches of rain in a very short time period near Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. I know of a local couple who were to vacation at Myrtle Beach the same time as all of this rain. Well, the old saying: The best laid plans of mice and men……

Sympathy is extended to the family and friends of Patricia (Goss) Tranquillo who passed away on October1. She was the widow of Victor Tranquillo Sr. and the daughter of J. Leo and Mary Goss. Hughes Company store and was a founder of the Lilly-Washington War Memorial Association.

Time to get out and start watching the trees as the leaves are starting to change colors and many have already fallen to the ground. This is always a fun time of year, especially in the mountains as we get to enjoy nature close up.

Sympathy is extended to the family and friends of Frances Hershel who recently passed away. Fran was a Lilly High School graduate and then served in the United States Marines for twenty years. She was a Post member of the Lilly American Legion. Sympathy is also extended to the family of Paul Williams who also recently passed away.

The Knights of Columbus Lilly Council will be having a bake sale at Our Lady of the Alleghenies following all Masses on October 3rd and 4th.

Many of you watched the programs featuring Pope Francis on his tour of Washington, New York and Philadelphia. I am quite impressed with his humble ways and feel he brings great honor and glory to the Catholic faith. If everyone, both religious and laity, and all world leaders would follow his example the world would be a better place.

Last week, Loura the sculptor and her husband, Greg Dobbs, from the Spiritual Arts Foundation in Orlando, Florida made a long trip, by pickup truck, to John Paul ll Manor in Cresson to deliver and install a bronze bust and podium of St. John Paul ll at the nursing home of his name. The visitors along with the help of several workers from Calandra’s. on their lunch break, set the art piece in place. It is a dignified addition to the front garden of the home and will be dedicated in the near future. We, of Polish heritage should be proud that St. John Paul ll is being honored locally.

Costs of the project were partially paid by donations from the local area. A substantial donation was collected at Our Lady of the Alleghenies here in Lilly. Several thousand is still needed to cover the costs. Donations of any size can be made to the Spiritual Arts Foundation P.O. Box 747, Windermere Fl. 34786. The donations are tax deductible as the Foundation is a 501 (c) (3).

The past two weekends have brought crowds to the War Memorial field for Mainine Panther football games. The parking areas have been full each weekend.

The volunteers at the War Memorial have put in many long days all summer long. It is remarkable the work they keep doing at the field. It won’t be long and they will get a little winter rest. Good job, guys and girls!
If you’re up to the field you will notice the concrete base in front of the basketball court recently constructed by Jerry Dunmyer and crew who will be brick facing it this week. This base is for a bell tower that will soon be erected reaching about 42 feet to the heavens. More to come—.
