The Lilly Junior Girl Scout Troop that includes girls from Kindergarten through grade 5 are currently raising funds to send 1,000 boxes of Girl Scout cookies to our military troops both overseas and state side. The program is called Operation Sweet Appreciation. So far 350 boxes have been sponsored.

B. Jeannie (Leap) George is the troop leader. Donation in any amount can be mailed to Troop #46508 5396 Portage Street, Lilly Pa. 15938 or call 814-979-8281. The scouts will be at the Logan Valley Mall outside of Applebees on Friday, March 13th from 5 until 9:00 PM and at Sam’s Club Saturday March 14 from 2 until 6:00 PM.

The annual spring cleanup day at the Lilly War Memorial field will be held on Saturday, March 21 from 8:00 AM until the work is done .Coaches, parents, team members and board members are all ask to pitch in for a couple of hours to get the field in shape for the coming season. Bring gloves and a rake if possible. This group effort really helps the association each spring. Rain date is the following Saturday, March 28.

It is almost three months until Memorial Day. I am working on the program already as this is the 70th anniversary of the end of WWII and the 150th anniversary of the end of the Civil War. A special program is being planned for 11:00 AM.

All WWII veterans and a guest are invited to the War Memorial Banquet the Saturday before the holiday. Call Bob Monahan or Joe Gides for tickets. A letter will be mailed later.

Tuesday, March 17 will be Saint Patrick Day throughout the area. This is one of the favorite holidays of the year for those with Irish heritage, both real and imagined. The original founders of the area, Joseph and Catherine Moyer brought some Irish heritage here as Catherine was Scot-Irish with the last name Cassidy. Drink some green beer in their honor. Don’t forget to wear some green also.

Sympathy is extended to the family and friends of Paula Gides who recently passed away here in Lilly. Her husband, John, is well known in the community. Sympathy also is extended to the family and friends of Joseph Kondis who recently died. Joe was a Lilly High School graduate and a US Army veteran. He was an ardent supporter of the Historical Society and War Memorial.

Although it is only starting to warm up outside it is ever so much better than all the freezing weather we had this winter. I finally can get outside more. It will soon be time for the many walkers to start using the walking trail again. Time also to think about the robins and hummingbirds. The last cold spell the winter birds cleaned out my three feeders as fast as they could be filled. At least they looked well fed. This upcoming week looks great with temperatures in the 40’s.

Congratulations to the many local grade school basketball teams who won championships lately. This bodes well for future high school teams. I didn’t get all the kids names yet but do know that grandson Connor Mento and granddaughter Kiera Nadolsky were among the champs.

You are an old timer if you remember when all the girls and women were required to wear either a hat or a babushka to church.
