2014

Well, we are in the New Year now. Don’t forget the date when writing checks etc. It usually takes me a week or two to make the annual adjustment.

Christmas was very enjoyable. All of my children and most of my grand children were at my house after church on Christmas Eve. My sister Monica and her children and granddaughter also visited. It is always a great evening. On the 28th son Steve and I made a trip to Hagerstown to visit my son John and his family and see their tree.

ST. LUKES

St. Luke’s Church will hold a Lessons and Carols with Holy Communion at the church this coming Sunday, January 5th, at 5:30 P.M. The program includes Scriptures and Carols relating to the Epiphany. The public is welcome to attend.

SYMPATHY

Sympathy is extended to the family and friends of 96 year old Ann Mazur who died on Christmas Day. Ann was a world traveler and had sailed on both the Queen Mary and the Queen Elizabeth. She had visited many countries and islands through out her life.

The community lost one of its most famous sons with the passing of Bill Tremel on December 22nd. Bill was the only Lilly youth to make it into the big league, playing for the Chicago Cubs from 1954 until 1956. He married a Lilly girl, Marie Mattiello, and then resided in Altoona. He still had many friends in Lilly and would attend the Triple AAABA games here each summer. The community’s sympathy is extended to his family and friends.

OLD TIMER

According to PJ Sloan you are an old timer if you remember Chicken Wing Charlie. In the late 1940s or   early 1950s Chicken Wing Charlie was a hobo who would spend time in a hobo camp built from railroad ties at Carneys Crossing. Allegedly as trains passed the make shift camp, carrying loads of live chickens to market, Charlie would reach into slow moving freight cars and grab the chickens by the wing, pulling the wings off the chickens, some times up to thirty pair of wings a day. He would then cook them over his campfire. Other hoboes were welcome to dinner if they brought some vittles, such as a bottle of wine, to the table. PJ claims ol’ chicken Wing Charlie started the chicken wing

TREE LIGHTING

The Tree Lighting ceremony on Saturday, November 30th was a very nice event with a large crowd battling the cold wintry night to enjoy it. The horse and sleigh rides were well received with just over 200 children of all ages from infant to eighty plus enjoying the old fashioned event. It was enjoyable to watch the little children show their anxiety when their turn to ride came about. The Festival of the Nativity at St. Luke’s church drew many visitors to see the 50 or more Nativity sets on display. All in All it was a great start to the Holiday season.

Note: A cell phone was found on the sleigh about 6:30 PM. If you lost one call me at 886-4694.

A colorful part of the evening occurred when Santa Claus, Mrs Claus and many elves took a sleigh ride and passed out candy to the children. The group was sponsored by the Lilly GBU. Another nice touch to the evening rides were when several teen-agers, all junior firemen, met on the corner of Railroad and Cleveland Street holding signs that ask Emma Racz if she would go to the Snowflake Ball with Billy Conley. Her answer was –Yes.

Starting to notice many residents beginning to put up their outside Christmas lighting for the holidays. The Bank Corner is shaping up with the Manger in place and the community tree lit across the street.

The town always takes on a dazzling display of color for the season.

LEGION NEWS

CHRISTMAS

It is now less than three weeks until Christmas and I still have some gift shopping to do. I have my list made out and my Christmas Eve menu of items needed for my Slovak-Polish-American dinner. That evening is my favorite time of the year when it is a big joy to have the kids and grandkids all gather for an evening of merriment.

THANKSGIVING

This was the first time in 50 years that I had Thanksgiving dinner out of state. Steve and I headed to son John’s home near Hagerstown to enjoy a festive dinner with his family. While Lilly was draped in a sparkling display of ice on all of the trees, his farm was ice and snow free, and you could actually sit outside.
