LILLY POLISH PICNIC Sunday, August 19th is one of my favorite days this summer. That is when Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church is holding the annual Lilly Polish Picnic. This is always a great event, rain or shine, and features games for the kids and adults, refreshments, music and some of the finest Polish foods found anywhere. Besides that you get to visit with others you don’t get to see too often. There is plenty of parking and the black bears are still deep in the forest so come out to Lilly and have an enjoyable time. The picnic is on Hilltop Street just beyond the War Memorial ball field. Stop in anytime from noon until 9:00 PM.
VOLLEYBALL NET There has been a volleyball net placed in the War Memorial field for the use of both children and adults. The Lilly Area Ambulance Association was a major contributor to its installation. Sand will be added in the future. I am told by some teenagers that they use it often. The basketball court gets a lot of use. Most days there are several youths playing there.
TRIPLE AAABA Lilly was host to 3 games this year that brought in visitors from 5 states other than Pennsylvania, they were: Ohio, Michigan, New York, Maryland and Louisiana. Dry weather and warm temperatures made for nice turnouts each day.
LEGION PICNIC At least 109 members and guests attended the Lilly American Legions annual picnic on August 12th.The food was great and the delicious homemade cookies baked by Sue Paul were excellent. I am told Sue was covered with flower as she eagerly made the cookies.
SPORTS HALL OF FAME A former Lilly resident, Sue Panek, was inducted into the Cambria County Sports Hall of Fame for an ongoing lifetime of excellence in basketball. As a star at Bishop Carroll Sue led the Huskies to the 1987 state championship then while playing for the University of Maryland she helped the Terrapins advanve to four straight NCAA appearances, including a trip to the final four. After graduation she embarked on a coaching career with stops in high school, college and the WNBA. Sue is currently the Director of Basket Ball Operations for the two time defending WNBA Eastern Conference champion, Atlanta Dream.
SYMPATHY Sympathy is extended to the family and friends of Wyneva (Rumery) Riley who recently passed away. She was 94 and a member of Saint Luke’s Church.
